For Our Health
Can my Mouth Really be Disease Free?!?
BY ROBIN P. STEELY, DDS
If I could show you a way that you could have NO gum disease or NO decay, AND im- prove your overall health, would we have something to
talk about? Does this seem too good to be true? Let me assure you that recent advances in our understanding of in- flammation and infection in our mouths can lead us to make this statement.
The mouth is the beginning of our digestive tract – therefore, what we see in the mouth is reflected in what hap- pens in the rest of your body. The bac- teria that are present in our mouths have been shown to increase our risk of heart attacks and atherosclerosis, increase the amount of diabetes that we have, been implicated as a link to low birth weight babies, play a role in esophageal and pancreatic cancer, have a part in Alzhei- mer’s and dementia, and effect arthritis. In a study published in November, 2016, it was stated that “Periodontal Disease (gum disease) resulting from high risk pathogenic bacteria should be consid- ered causal of arteriosclerotic vascular disease.” The American Heart Associa- tion has stated that, after an extensive review of the literature, “Periodontal Disease” is independently associated with arteriosclerotic vascular disease.” This is Level A evidence demonstrated cause.
So how does this happen? Normal bacteria that exists in our mouths. In an acidic environment, these bacteria multiply and form what is commonly known as “plaque” on our teeth. More accurately, this “plaque” is biofilm – a substance full of living, moving bacte- ria. If our gums have any bleeding, it is an open wound with a direct connection to our blood stream. These bacteria cre- ate inflammation of the arterials walls, leading to a cascade of events that will allow a clot to form and begin to block the vessel. Therefore, the objective to reversing heart disease and other sys- temic inflammatory disease is to reduce
the inflammation that is present. And it all STARTS IN THE MOUTH!
Using a simple brush test, we can quickly identify whether bleeding is present or not. When bleeding is noted, a sample of bacteria on the tongue and around the teeth can be taken, sent to
a highly sophisticated laboratory that specializes in this type of testing. With the information that we receive, a cus- tomized master plan can be developed that will quickly put out the fires of in- flammation in your mouth. Changing your habits with your homecare, utiliz- ing antibiotic and antimicrobial rinses, will allow you to control any recurrence of the inflammatory process in your mouth.
When you have identified the bac- teria that are present, been trained to disrupt the colonies of biofilm in the mouth on a daily basis, change your be- haviors regarding your homecare, and evaluate your nutrition, you are well on your way to having no gum disease or no decay. Controlling the bacteria in the mouth WILL make your mouth signifi- cantly healthier. A healthy mouth is a gum disease FREE and a decay FREE mouth!
