On the southeast corner is St. Thom- as Episcopal Church built in 1876. It is a revival of the Gothic style popular in Europe from 1100 to about 1400. In con- trast to Romanesque, Gothic style fea- tures pointed arches which are stronger structurally and allow more windows to be built into the walls. Another feature is a Rose Window. If this church were in actual proportion to the medieval style, it would be about three times as tall as the Romanesque style. It was done by sup- porting the heavy roof with buttresses. [A buttress is built against the wall and helps support it]. In modern churches, this was not structurally necessary but stylized buttresses are set along the sides of St. Thomas. It was designed by Detroit architect Mortimer Smith in a particular version called English Gothic. Propo- nents of English Gothic argued that it was the only proper style for a church. This year St. Thomas Episcopal celebrates its 175th anniversary as a congregation. (See the previous Scene issue for its history).
You can see these revival styles all over Battle Creek, in public buildings, churches and private homes. My thanks to my professor, Dr. Peter Schmidt, who taught popular art and architecture at Western Michigan University as well as to Mary Butler of Heritage Battle Creek. It is from these two that I learned to ap- preciate these buildings and the architects who designed them.
