Be Optimistic about opportunities for children in our community... Read this!
The Optimist Club of Battle Creek’s goal is to “Bring Out the Best in Kids.” They are working to provide positive outlets and opportunities for our children through the development of programs in our schools and community. Inspired by “Art Prize” in Grand Rapids as a fun community event, members of the club have stepped up to the challenge and de- veloped their own mini “Art Prize” style competition for children.
On April 21, 2018 the first annual Op- timist Excellence in Art Competition is being held for area children in grades K-12. This show will feature nationally rec- ognized judges to review the work of our
talented young contestants. The judges for the 2018 Competition include: Richard Schlatter – local artist and winner of the 2017 People’s Choice Art Prize Competi- tion; Dallas Shoesmith – local artist and art instructor for 1000’s of budding artists in our community; Aimee Beaubin – adjunct asso- ciate professor at the School of Art Institute of Chicago; and Steven Rapp – managing photographer at Crate and Barrel Photo Stu- dios in Chicago. Students will be judged on both technical skill and originality.
The children’s artwork will be on dis- play at the event and will be judged that night. During the event, attendees can vote on as well as purchase the children’s
artwork in the silent auction. Area stu- dents are competing to win individual and group awards, but every school partici- pating is a winner. Participating schools will share in half of the proceeds from the silent auction to benefit programing in their schools. The other half of the pro- ceeds will go towards supporting youth programs in our community like Girls On the Run, the Special Olympics, and other Optimist sponsored events.
The competition will consist of two parts; a group competition and an indi- vidual competition. Schools across the greater Battle Creek area have entered their teams to compete in the group com- petition. Examples of group projects in- clude self-portrait collages, abstract pic- tures, and sculptures. A “Best-in-Show” winner will be chosen by our judges and a “Bidder’s Choice” winner will be awarded for the group whose entry raises the most money in the silent auction. So come ready to bid in support of our chil- dren and our community!
The second part of the competition is the individual event. Exceptional young people will be competing for cash and prizes totaling $1,000. A “Best-in-Show” winner will be awarded by our judges and a “People’s Choice” winner will be cho- sen by attendees voting at the art show. The masterpieces created by these talent- ed young people will also be up for silent auction, as they have donated their work to support the arts and their community.
You can support our children and our schools by coming out to the art show, buying the children’s art, and/or becoming a sponsor for the event. The show will be held April 21, 2018 at the Calhoun Area Career Center beginning at 2pm. Tickets will be $20 in Advance; $25 at the Door; non participating students may attend for $10. The Club is offering scholarships for those in need who want to attend. Those in need may contact their school for more in- formation. Sponsorships are needed from local businesses and community members who want to support our schools and our children.
