Back-To-School
Exciting changes are coming to the Montessori School this school year and beyond!
BY ANN PILZNER, Head of School
The school’s Richland campus will of- fer bilingual education in the Montessori tradition. All students in the campus’ pre- school and kindergarten program will par- ticipate in English and Spanish instruction every day.
Two Spanish speaking, Montessori- trained guides will work alongside the
campus’ two main teachers to provide indi- vidualized Montessori lessons in both lan- guages. Children will continue to receive the same amount of lessons as the previous English-only program with the added ben- efit of receiving lessons in Spanish as well.
Changes are also coming to the Mon- tessori School’s Kalamazoo campus this
fall as the school will begin offering sixth- year education. Typically corresponding with sixth grade in a public school, the sixth-year program will incorporate learn- ing through internships as well as on-cam- pus curriculum. Each sixth-year student will complete three internships with local businesses throughout the school year.
To accommodate the new sixth-year program and additional preschool open- ings, renovations of a newly acquired space adjacent to the existing Kalamazoo campus will begin in December 2018. Lo- cated at 710 Howard Street, the building will be remodeled to house the school’s existing elementary program as well as the new sixth-year program for the 2019-2020 school year.
Once the campus expansion is com- plete, the existing building at 750 Howard Street will house the Montessori School’s childcare, preschool, and kindergarten pro- grams. The campus reconfigurations will allow for 20 additional preschool open- ings for the 2019-2020 school year and an additional 10 preschool openings for the 2020-2021 school year. Waiting lists for our programs typically form a few years in advance, so we are excited to be able to welcome new students and families by ex- panding our capacity!
The Montessori School has served Southwest Michigan as a non-profit, pri- vate education institution since 1972. With campuses in Kalamazoo and Richland, the Montessori School offers a variety of pro- grams for children ages 3 to 12.
Before, during, and after school, high- ly qualified and credentialed teachers and support staff provide an educational expe- rience rooted in the teachings of Dr. Ma- ria Montessori. Known as the Montessori method, this teaching style emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and a respect for the child. Classroom spaces are purposefully designed and materials are carefully curated in pursuit of an edu- cational partnership.
Before- and after-school childcare is open to all students enrolled in the Mon- tessori School from 7:30am to 6pm during the regular school year at both campuses. Summer programs and childcare are avail- able to students at the Kalamazoo campus.
Enrollment and waiting lists for 2018- 2019 and 2019-2020 are open now.
