with one question. How many of you know someone who eats like total crud and doesn’t gain an ounce?
to – because let’s face it, if you had gained 40 pounds, you weren’t doing a lot of extra activity at all. So, by moving around more (which it’s been proven that walking briskly works every bit as good as running, FYI) you’re asking more of your body than it’s used to, so it’s going to burn more fat for recovery. Then, as you continue running and los- ing, your body will freak out and your metabolism will slow. This, in turn will create a larger hunger response (because your body is calling on Ghrelin since it thinks you’re always being chased by something and will need more fat). And, there you are, running your butt off, while maintaining the same amount of butt... sorry, but it’s true.
Thank you.
This myth is why we have a multi billion dollar industry of calorie count- ers, fit bits, weight loss low calorie shakes (and pills, and cremes, and even flipping weight loss water!). Let me make something very, very clear right now – that calorie counter on the treadmill that just said you burned 500 calories on your five mile jog? It’s as accurate as if it told you how many times you swore in your head during the same period of time. Everyone burns calories at a different pace, with different factors. But, one of the main factors ALL THE TIME is the amount of muscle you have on your body. Which is why one of my seven rules is INCLUDE STRENGTH TRAINING IN YOUR WORKOUTS.
scientifically. What they do know is that our body metabolizes the most when we are at rest... did you catch that? Now, before you swear off working out, you better let me finish. The reason why we metabolize more when we rest is because our bodies are recovering (or when
Here’s the very real, but very sad, scientific reality – science doesn’t know why people have different metabolisms. Literally, they can’t figure it out
But, this will bring me to a common argument from people, “The only time I’ve been able to lose weight was when I was running.” Which is normally
Okay, let’s debunk a myth very, very easily – Weight loss/weight management is all about calories in and calories out. Let me debunk this
followed up by, “And then it stopped working when I was 20 pounds from my goal.” So, here’s why this could be true for people. When you have 40 pounds to lose, physical activity will help you to metabolize more than you are used

our autonomic nervous system is busy breathing, heart-beating, digesting – you know, the stuff you don’t have to think about). Our brain and liver metabolize
as much as our muscles, in an average person (note the word “average”). And going crazy doing cardio and running a bazillion miles does very little to change that metabolism – in fact you might be hurting your metabolism by pushing your body into fight or flight response.
Here is why I tell you to lift. Build- ing more muscle, in fact more muscle than “average,” makes you metabolize more than average. So the weights you are lifting today aren’t at all meant to burn any calories you ate today. They are to build the muscles that will burn more calories next week, next month, and so on. Building muscle takes time and hard work. But, it’s SO worth it for weight management.
