“Better Hearing Month”
Provided by: Battle Creek Hearing Services
Hearing Loss is Invisible
Hearing loss, regardless of degree, can interfere with one’s ability to participate in the world that greatly depends on communi- cation for social, educational, and occupational activities. The prima- ry mechanism for perceiving sound is through our sense of hearing.
It has been described as a critical entrance to the brain, but when that entrance is blocked or obscured, there may be a mis-communica- tion. It is not easy for others to know that you have a hearing loss just by looking at you. The physi- cal impact is the effect it has on your ability to communicate, learn, and participate in social, educa- tional, and occupational activities. Losing Your Senses
A loss of hearing may make it seem that others are mumbling or may result in you becoming frustrated.
In fact, understanding speech occurs in your brain, not in your ears.
If the information your brain
is receiving is distorted by a loss of hearing, then it’s like reading
a book that is missing every other page. You may be able to guess what is missing but most of the time you are going to guess incor- rectly.
If you agree with one or more of the following statements, it may indicate the need to seek a com- plete hearing screening.
• You “favor” one ear over the
other.
• You have been told that the TV is
TOO Loud.
• You have difficulty following
conversations in groups and
noisy places.
• You ask people to repeat them-
selves, especially women and
young children.
• Hearing from a distance is more
trouble than it used to be, such
as in a church or theater.
• Family and friends have com-
mented on inability to hear.
No Good Reason to Wait
Most people typically disre- gard their hearing loss for five to seven years. This is a bad decision. Putting off the inevitable will just
make it harder to rectify the prob- lem. Your brain gets used to not hearing everyday sounds and the longer you live without sounds, the longer it may take the brain to understand them again. Regular hearing instrument use can help maintain your brain’s ability to interpret sounds.
Good communication is important in life and it starts with good hearing!
