CHANGING THE IMPACT OF DEMENTIA
Recently, the leadership team for Miles for Memories voted to expand their vision statement to be more con- sistent with their activities over the past three years. Programs and activities con- tinue to be made available for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, as well as their caregivers.
New Vision Statement: Creating solutions for those impacted by dementia in Calhoun County through movement, programming and research.
A variety of movement programs are underway across the county in addition to the celebration held this year on September 17 in downtown Battle Creek. One such program is the Vineyard of Memories Art project. This
project allows for the person to engage the creative part of the brain but also
to experience small motor movement. The smiles on the faces of participants, whether a person with dementia or their caregiver, brings such joy to the onlooker that it’s heartwarming just to watch
it unfold. This year programs will be experienced in at least four communities including Battle Creek, Albion, Homer, and Marshall. Additional Vineyard of Memories events will be added as oppor- tunities are identified.
Twenty percent of the dollars raised each year are also targeted toward local research initiatives. In April, a check for $8,000 was presented to Michigan
State University for their early-stage Alzheimer’s disease research. As part of this commitment, it is the intent to bring those results back to our community through free updates at least twice a year. Most recently, Dr. Counts from Michigan State University did just that as well as provided participants an overview of sev- eral of the different types of dementia.
One of the exciting programs recently launched is the Help Home Program. This voluntary program is designed to
help return a lost loved one with demen- tia to their home as quickly and safely as possible.
This program is unique because it is
a successful collaboration between Miles for Memories and area law enforcement agencies. The database from the program is maintained by the 9-1-1 Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch and infor- mation can be entered at their office in Marshall or the Sheriff’s office.
Once the information is entered into the county database it is accessible from any patrol car that might be out there looking for your lost loved one. It is important that the dispatch office be noti- fied if any of the information changes such as emergency contact information.
Brochures are being distributed now throughout Calhoun County, includ-
ing Region 3B Area Agency on Aging, Senior Health Partners, area facilities, pharmacies, physician offices, elder law offices, the Sheriff’s office, the 9-1-1 Consolidated Dispatch office, and more, including Senior Times. If you can’t find a copy please call (269) 979-1412 ext 301.
Upcoming fundraising events include the annual Ganton Golf Outing. It
will be held Friday June 10 at Cedar Creek Golf Course. Reach out to Jenny Andrews at (269) 969-8900 to regis-

They will be rocking for 27 hours to raise funds and awareness for our com- munity. New this year is a silent auction event featuring painted chairs. Reach
out to Terri Chapman for more details at (269) 962-1750. More events are being scheduled every day.
The annual celebration event will be held on September 17 this year in down- town Battle Creek. Sign up to run or walk the new 5K route, stroll the 1⁄2 mile celebration route, volunteer to help a senior that might need assistance, or sim- ply enjoy the celebration. We invite you to create a team or join the Senior Times team. All are welcome. Registration is now open at itsyourrace.com.
Sponsorships and donations are
now being sought for this year’s event. Dollars are housed at the Battle Creek Community Foundation and can be sent directly there. Simply address the check to BCCF/Miles for Memories.
