Medicare –
How Do I Get Started?
If you are turning 65 in the coming year it’s time to start deciding what type of Medicare plan is going to best meet your needs. Starting early will help you gather the information you need and keep it from getting so over- whelming. Some will be automati- cally signed up for Medicare based on previous programs they are enrolled in, others will need to do more of the work themselves. You can also sign up online through the Social Security Administration at https://secure.ssa. gov/iClaim/rib.
Just in case you’re not sure if you’re about to turn 65, Medicare knows. Rest assured you will be getting a mound of information in the mail. Start sorting it when it comes or simply schedule to meet with a MMAP counselor; they are here to help. Reach out to 1-800- 803-7174 to find a counselor in your area.
There are two main ways to get your Medicare coverage – Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). Some people get additional cover- age, like Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) or Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap).
Use these steps to help you decide what coverage you want:
Step 1: Decide if you want Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Iike an HMO or PPO)
• You can choose Original Medicare. • You can choose a Medicare
Advantage (MA) Plan.
Step 2: Decide if you want prescrip- tion drug coverage (Part D)
• You chose Original Medicare in Step 1.
• You chose a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan in Step 1.
Step 3: Decide if you want supple- mental coverage
• You chose Original Medicare in Step 1.
• You chose a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan in Step 1.
Other Options
• In addition to Original Medicare or an MA Plan, you may be able to join other types of Medicare health plans.
• You may be able to save money or have other choices if you have lim- ited income and resources.
• You may also have other coverage, like employer or union, military, or veterans' benefits.

5 Things To Do In Your
First Year With Medicare
1. Fill out an Authorization Form if you want your family or friends
to call Medicare on your behalf. Medicare can't give personal health information about you to anyone unless you give permission in writing first.
2. Make a "Welcome to Medicare" Preventive Visit appointment dur-
ing the first 12 months you have Medicare. This free, one-time com- prehensive "Welcome to Medicare" preventive visit puts you in control of your health and your Medicare from the start.
3. Sign up for MyMedicare.
gov, their secure online service is where you can access your personal Medicare information 24 hours a day, every day. You can:
• Track your health care claims
• View your "Medicare Summary
Notices" (MSNs)
• Order a replacement Medicare card
• Check your Medicare Part B
deductible status
• View your eligibility information • Track your preventive services
• Find information about your
Medicare health plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), or search for a new one
• Keep your Medicare information in one convenient place.
4. Learn what Medicare covers. You’ll get a list of tests, items, and services that are covered no matter where you live. If your test, item, or service isn’t listed, talk to your doctor or other health care provider about why you need certain tests, items,
or services, and ask if Medicare will cover them.
5. Decide if you want to go paper- less, and get your next free copy of “Medicare & You” [PDF, 5.91 MB] electronically! Next October, you’ll get an email from Medicare link-
ing you to “Medicare & You” online instead of a paper copy in your mail- box.
