CELEBRATE WITH US ON SEPTEMBER 16
By: Sherii Sherban, Publisher
Here we go... there are just a few
weeks to get registered for the Miles for Memories signature event day on September 16 and there is something for everyone that is looking for solutions for those impacted by dementia in Calhoun County.
Registration and packet pick up for
the event is open Saturday September 16 starting at 8am at Battle Creek Books,
51 W. Michigan Ave, Ste. A, Battle Creek, MI, 49017.
The morning activities will kick off
at 10am on Saturday September 16 with a beautiful musical send off at Wave Square at the corner of Michigan Avenue and McCamly.
Individuals can register for the Community Stroll Celebration on site or online.
There is no cost to participate in the stroll. Participates can purchase a shirt at the time of registration for $15 if they would like
while supplies last. The stroll will be led by the big red wagon and the students from the Michigan Youth Challenge as well as the Harper Creek Dance Team once again this year and take off at 10:15am from Wave Square. Walkers in the stroll will have
the option to turn at the halfway point to complete a half-mile walk or to journey on to travel a full mile. The walk is not timed and is meant to be a celebration.
Onsite activities include the community stroll, movement exercises, music and drumming, canvas painting project, memory rocks, photo booth, flu shots, lunch, information regarding new programs, and more. There is no cost to participate
in any of the activities.
For a new added trip down memory
lane, participates that have pre-registered will have an opportunity to leave a special memory rock along the path for another to find. We hope that as others find them they will take a photo with the special memory rock, share it on Facebook, and move the rock to a new location for another to find. A limited number will also be available the day of the walk or you are invited to bring one of your own.
An additional group of pre-registered participants will have an opportunity to do an onsite Vineyard Canvas painting activity. There is no cost to participate but space is limited to just 50. Pre-registration is required by calling (269) 979-1412 ext. 305.
Visitors to downtown can also swing by the Farmers Market when they are done with the morning activities.
What if you don’t want to walk, run or stroll but you still want to be a part of the festivities? Please come out and volunteer. We have opportunities before the event,
during the event and even after the event. One of the areas that will be greatly appreciated will be those that offer to walk with our Community Stroll participants. Extra walkers mean a great opportunity
to support those that might need an arm
or a hand as they are moving over curbs, up or down slight inclines, or possibly even a little extra conversation during the stroll. Bring your noisemakers as well since this group is always a bit spirited.
This event is a perfect opportunity
to bring out the residents from a facility, develop a team, or simply support a great local cause.
Rain or shine we will be celebrating. In case of rain the event will be moved inside Full Blast.
Parking for facility buses will be along Jackson Street. Parking for participants and volunteers is recommended in one
of the nearby parking ramps, at the Battle Creek High School parking lot or even the Kool Family Center parking lot.
For more information please contact Miles for Memories at (269) 979-1412 ext. 305, listen to the Miles for Memories Moment on WBCK Tuesday Mornings
at 8:50am, visit the Facebook page,
or find the forms on the website at www.scenepub.com/milesformemories.
None of this would be possible without the generous donations from the sponsors and the community. Please share our thanks with them when you get a chance. A complete list will be on display downtown during the event.
Help us make a difference in our community and create solutions for those impacted by dementia through movement, programming and research.
