Sports in America: Pickleball
By: Cheryl Luts
Why is Pickleball one of the fast-
est growing sports around the country? Probably because it’s for all ages and athletic abilities. It has simple rules and is easy to learn. It’s so popular now that Pickleball courts are available for play in all 50 states. Once you learn to play it you will find that you will want to play every day.
What is it? It’s a racquet sport that is a cross between tennis and ping-pong. The paddle is smaller than a tennis racquet and the ball is a whiffle ball and you hit it to your opponents over a net. The court is the size of a badminton court. It can either be played indoors or out. The 55+ crowd loves it for the exercise and social aspect. It’s easy to be successful quickly.
We’re fortunate to have the Battle Creek Pickleball Club that offers outdoor play at the KCC tennis courts and inside courts during the winter at the Battle Creek Christian Pre-School and Full Blast. The current schedule is Monday and Thursday nights at KCC from 6pm to dusk and Wednesday and Saturday morn-
ings from 9-11am. The cost in the sum- mer is $1 per day and changes to $2 for indoor play.
Check out the Battle Creek Pickleball Club Facebook page for location, times, and pictures and you’ll probably see someone you know on the courts. Also, to see basics of pickleball, visit whatispick- There are several videos there that will peak your interest to try this active, fun sport.
All of us in the BCPC group welcome newcomers and are anxious to show you the game, so come on out, wear exercise clothes and good tennis shoes. We’ll put a paddle in your hand and have you playing within minutes.

Ganton Senior Communities Earns
2017 Bronze National Quality Award
By: Alyssa Jones, Ganton Senior Communities
Lakeview Assisted Living, a Ganton Senior Community, has been recog-
nized as a 2017 recipient of the Bronze
– Commitment to Quality Award for
its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care. The dis- tinction is one of three progressive award levels through the National Quality Award Program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/ NCAL), the leading association for long term and post-acute care. The program honors association members across the nation that have demonstrated their com- mitment to improving quality of care for seniors and persons with disabilities.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for our commitment to delivering quality care,” said Scott Ganton, Owner, Ganton Senior Communities. “Going through the process of achieving the Bronze award has made our organization stronger.”
The National Quality Award Program, which AHCA/NCAL established in 1996, is based on the core values and criteria
of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is also the foundation of the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative. The Baldrige program helps organizations in different business sectors improve and achieve performance excel- lence.
The Award Program has three lev- els: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Providers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop
an organizational profile with essential performance elements such as vision, mission statement, and key strengths and challenges. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement
a performance improvement system. Trained Examiners review each Bronze application to determine if the center
has met the demands of the criteria. As a recipient of the Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award, Lakeview Assisted Living may now move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the Silver - Achievement in Quality Award criteria.
“I commend Ganton Senior Communities for embarking on the jour- ney to quality improvement,” said the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Alana Wolfe. “I encourage Lakeview Assisted Living to continue to build on the strong foundation it has created.”
Lakeview Assisted Living is located at 14661 Helmer Road South in Battle Creek.
