This month the National Geographic Channel is starting a new season of the program “MARS” that is both a doc- umentary scientific look at the planet Mars as well as a fictional story of
an earth launch to the Red Planet that sets up both military and commercial research operations that could lead to
a permanent human colony on Mars. Sounds impossible doesn’t it? Just as impossible as sending astronauts to land on the Moon, get geological sam- ples, do testing and then safely return to Earth – which is exactly what hap- pened the summer of 1969 – nearly 50 years ago. Maybe it’s not so impossible with the right technical skill and a lot of effort by those involved.
Just prior to watching the first pro- gram of this series, another show was picked up by my DVR that was even more engaging about the vision and determination of a multi-billionaire named Elon Musk (who heads up the Tesla Electric Motor Car company) but who also has formed the SPACEX Company with the mission of building a spacecraft that can go to Mars to begin colonization, but also be able to return to Earth. His plan is working well so far after much trial and error,
as he employs thousands of high-tech people in his enterprise of a major launch in a coming decade of his “Falcon” re-usable rocket program. It’s a fascinating story that’s worth watch- ing in the years ahead.
So where’s the faith in all this? Will God be found on Mars (or the Moon for that matter) if earthlings are able to safely get there? The Bible says yes!
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your pres- ence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there.”
~Psalm 139:7-8
But I believe even more profoundly, that God can be found here on Earth. In fact the Bible states that truth on multiple occasions (John 1:14; Luke 2:7; Matt. 2:1; Phil 2:7) that God came in person as Jesus of Nazareth, and remains here on Earth, constantly pres- ent through the Holy Spirit, and always accessible as soon as you call.
The wonderful message of Advent and Christmas is not just that God came (and comes), but that God is on your side and on my side. He truly is “Emmanuel” which means “God with us.”
May you be blessed by the Living God this December and always!
Faithfully yours, Jim Gysel

One day each year the Life Enrichment Directors and residents at Ganton Senior Communities hop on the bus and spend the day granting blessings to strangers in Battle Creek. The smiles abounded as residents “paid it forward” in spades.
The day began with Lakeview Assisted Living inviting Battle Creek police offi- cers for cider and donuts while Heritage Assisted Living hosted Battle Creek fire- fighters for cookies and coffee to offer thanks for their service and bravery.
Late in the morning the group deliv- ered a large donation to the Battle Creek Veterans Administration. Stops were also made at the Cancer Care Center and KCC where people were randomly asked to
join residents on the bus to receive candy, money, and other items to brighten their day. The acts were continued through lunch at Clara’s on the River as residents walked around the restaurant and blessed guests.
“We have a lot of events and activities
but I think most would say that Random Acts of Kindness is their favorite,” said Scott Ganton, owner. “Watching our res- idents make a difference in people’s lives as well as the reaction on the recipients’ faces is priceless. People are always tenta- tive when we invite them on the bus or are approached on the street but it always ends with hugs and smiles. It really is all about spreading kindness and everyone needs a little more of that.”
