For former Prisoners of War, Vietnam Veterans, and Vietnam-era Veterans who may have been exposed to Agent Orange, certain types of heart disease are presumed by the Department of Veterans Affairs to be caused by their service (we call these presumptive conditions).
Being that February is American Heart Month, let’s talk about hearts.
Of course, we’re also getting close to Valentine’s Day so I don’t want there to be any confusion about the kind of hearts we’re talking about. I’m not talking about pretty red and pink hearts adorning the front of some overpriced greeting card (that I’ll most certainly be buying) or a heart shaped box full of chocolates filled with mystery fruits and nougats (some of my greatest disappointments in life have stemmed from those boxes). I’m talking about that incredible, four-chambered little muscle in your chest.
There are also benefits available to the surviving spouses of Veterans who have died as the result of, either direct- ly or secondarily, a presumptive con- dition such as heart disease or diabetes (please keep in mind that presumptive conditions are not limited to diabetes and heart disease). At the time of death, the Veteran did not have to be receiving any benefits from Veterans Affairs in order for the surviving spouse to be eli- gible for benefits.

of your needs.

The Cleveland Clinic provides some astonishing facts about the heart. Every minute the heart pumps one and a half gallons of blood through over 60,000 miles of blood vessels and the average heart beats 100,000 times per day! They also point out that heart disease has been found in mummies as old as 3,000 years. According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States for men and women, killing approximately 610,000 people every year.
If you’re a former Prisoner of War, a Vietnam Veteran, or a Vietnam-
era Veteran who believes they were exposed to Agent Orange or the surviv- ing spouse of a Veteran in one of these categories, please don’t hesitate to stop by our office or contact us.
Additionally, Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange and have developed type 2 diabetes (another presumptive condition) may have heart disease or other heart related conditions that are the result of the diabetes.
Likewise, if you know a Veteran who may have a presumptive condition please encourage them to stop by or contact us. Calhoun County Veterans Affairs is located on the third floor of the Toeller Building at 190 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI, 49014. We can be reached by phone at (269) 969-6735.
