GREETINGS FROM THE MICHIGAN SENATE
Hello, everyone, and I hope you are enjoying your summer. It’s taken quite some time this year for the consecutive warm weather days to arrive Calhoun County, but I hope you are settling into the summer months well. Because this month’s focus in the Senior Times is
on safety issues in medication, I’d like to pass along a few tips from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The administration has listed a few tips to remember when buying online prescrip- tions.

Another law recently passed is one aimed at helping teens remain ciga- rette-free. The number of teens using e-cigarettes continues to climb. In fact, e-cigarette use among high school stu- dents increased by nearly 80 percent between 2017 and 2018, according to a recent survey.

Senate bills now signed into law
will help keep these products away from young people. Public Act 18 of 2019 (SB 106) and Public Act 17 of 2019 (SB 155) ban the sale of e-ciga- rettes and alternative vapor products to minors and prohibit minors from pos- sessing and using these products. Under the new laws, violators will be subject to fines and penalties. In addition, retailers will have to store the products behind the counter or in a locked case, display a prominent sign explaining the law and ask for identification to verify the age of the buyer.
3. Don't provide personal information such as credit card numbers unless you are sure the site will protect them.
In Lansing, the State Legislature held session through June, and I’d like to get you caught up on some issues on which we’ve been working. The follow- ing laws recently passed and are now public acts:
The new laws take effect Sept. 2.
Public Acts 634-636 of 2018 allow local governments to reduce the number of days and limit the hours fireworks can be set off. Local officials can restrict the use of consumer fireworks except on the following days after 11am:
Finally, if you’re looking for some entertainment for the family in July, make time to visit the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show at the W.K. Kellogg Airport or attend one of the 4th of July parades in Calhoun County during the 4th of July week.
• December 31 until 1am on January 1. • Saturday and Sunday immediate-
ly preceding Memorial Day until

• When serving food buffet-style, put dishes to be kept cold inside dish- es full of ice. This goes for salads, mayonnaise-based condiments, and shrimp to name a few.
• Do not let a buffet stay out for more than two hours. If necessary, remove first round of food and replace with fresh that you have kept in a refriger- ator if the party is longer than that.
Remember these tips when you plan your parties. It is the season for graduations, weddings, and family reunions and ensuring everyone is eating safe food is more fun for every- one. Happy summer!
Times has certainly changed for cooks! My grandmothers grew up on farms with cook stoves that you had to load with wood, pumped their water from a well to bring into house, and food storage was canning and storing it in the fruit cellar. Now we have microwave ovens, smart refrigerators, and insta-pots.

With all of these changes, we need to update some of our methods of cooking too. For example, back then, it was common for cooks to thaw meat on the counter overnight. We now know this is a dangerous practice yet when I helped with a cookbook fund- raiser, people still submitted recipes that said to thaw meat this way. Yikes!
The following tips are just a reminder of safe food habits.
• Thaw meat from freezer one or two days ahead of use in a refrigerator.
• When transporting foods, always use a cooler or insulated bag. Cold foods should be kept below 41 degrees and hot foods should be kept above 165 degrees. Undercooked meats and warm potato salad are the number one reasons for food illness in the summer.
