Mary Frances moved with her family to Whittier, CA, in 1910, but always consider Albion, Michigan, her true home and roots. She once wrote, “I have nothing but good memories of the town where I was born in 1908. I hope to return some day, to make new ones.” Her hope was never achieved.
The main course, “A Considerable Town” featured snails with Pernod, tomatoes and garlic, followed by whole Pacific rockfish charcoal-grilled with wild herbs and anchovies, young spit-roasted pheasant with new pota- toes, a bitter lettuce salad with goat cheese croutons, and three plum sher- bets with orange rind boats.

Her readers better knew Mary Frances as M.F.K. Fisher. Her fans considered her the greatest food writ- er of the era (1908-1992). She wrote some 20 books and many stories and articles about food; such as, “Consider the Oyster,” “The Gastronomical Me,” and the most inclusive of them all, “The Art of Eating,” which contains five books in one.
a special dinner where each course was designed around the titles of some of her books. The first course, “Consider the Oyster,” was a selection of four varieties of oysters on the half shell. Today they are delicacies, but in early American history, oysters were the food of the poor.

Caregivers are on everybody’s radar these days, we here at Senior Times want to make sure caregivers are appreciated. We are planning a Retreat, along with other senior pro- viders of Calhoun County, October
23 at the First Congregational Church of Battle Creek. There will be many opportunities for those in attendance to relax, have some food, have some fun, and listen to people who can give some thoughts about our health and our loved ones health. But a great part about it is to talk with other people about how they manage the job of making their care receiver comfort- able, safe, and healthy.
This event is free to all unpaid caregivers in Calhoun County.

Albion claims Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher or M.F.K. Fisher, because she is a native, having been born on Irwin Ave., daughter of Rex and Edith Kennedy.
satisfied... and it is all one.”
On her 70th birthday, she prepared
In the book Gastronomical Me she states, “People ask me, Why do you write about food, and eating, and drinking? Why don’t you write about the struggle for power and security and about love, the way others do?”
The final course “A Cordial Water” suggested a Muscat de Beaumes-de- venise, coffee, and candies. What a way to celebrate a birthday and com- pliments M.F.K. Fishers’ belief that, “Sharing food with another human being is an intimate act that should not be indulged in lightly.”
“The easiest answer is to say that, like most other humans, I am hungry. But there is more than that. It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth, and the love of it, and the hunger for it... and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger
Some of Albion’s offerings this summer to commemorate the life and gifts of Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher include a display at the Albion District Library, celebrating MFK’s 111th Birthday on Monday, July 3. Albion Businesses will mark the day with MFK specials along with birthday cake at the American Legion and fire- works. A cookbook exchange will take place at the Library on August 1 from 6-7:30pm.
