Summer vacation is almost here, and children will not be in school. Children will be home all day with us or maybe without us. This season can be less traumatic for
all the family with a little plan- ning ahead. Finding activities to keep the children busy will reduce summer boredom which seems
to descend about two weeks after school is out.
The Family Enrichment Center has some activities for families available. There are tickets avail- able for Binder Park Zoo. There are some spots open for Meijer Gardens. For those who came to the Appreciation Dinner there are passports for the State Parks com- ing out the first week in June.
Agency Events - All events take place at Westlake Presbyterian Church, 415 S. 28th St., Battle Creek:
The Saturday Parenting Series includes art activities for 6-12-year olds. That will be the 20th. There is also Goguac Lake with a nom- inal entrance fee. The Children’s Garden and Sculpture Park is also free of charge at the Arboretum. Keep an eye on our Face book Page for more opportunities to spend quality time with the kids this summer.

MI Choice Waiver – How it Works & What to Expect
By: Paulette Porter, Marketing & Outreach Coordinator, CareWell Services SW
The MI Choice Waiver program offers a realistic choice for receiving long-term care in the home and community rather than in a nursing home.
A registered nurse and a social worker visit the person in his/her home to determine what the client wants, and what family members and friends can do to help. The nurse or social worker provides a list of qualified agencies from which the client can choose, and contacts agencies if the client desires. After
services are started, the nurse or social worker stays in touch with
the client on a regular basis to make adjustments, as desired. MI Choice uses an approach that is person- centered, meaning clients are in control and make the decisions about their care.
CareWell administers the MI Choice program in several counties in southwest Michigan, meaning they provide the nurses and social workers that visit clients and help them get assistance – this service
is known as care management. CareWell, and other Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), are well suited to manage clients’ care because they don’t provide in-home services and have no financial self-interest in referring clients to particular services or service providers. CareWell is also responsible for data collection, financial management, and implementing cost controls. Fourteen AAAs administer MI Choice; seven other agencies across the state also perform this role.
