OUR VISION:
Creating solutions for those impacted by dementia in Calhoun County through movement, programming and research.
SAFE RETURN PROGRAM
During this month of safety issues, my mind is often drawn to the person living with dementia.
Six in ten people living with dementia are likely to wander, which creates great concern and fear for the caregiver.
Both the Personal I.D. bracelet and the G.P.S. watch and recovery brace- let are made with a 100% surgical grade silicone band to eliminate sensi- tivities and irritations.
The next step is to add the Personal I.D. bracelet. It provides support for the person beginning with the earliest stages of dementia to continue to be active. It is a visual component worn by the per- son that securely stores the same emer- gency information as well as a complete medical profile online, which can be managed directly from an app on the caregiver’s phone or personal computer. Registered first responders can access the data in five seconds or less. Time saves lives.
The final stage is the process includes a variety of respite programs. Some are currently available through a variety of sources. Miles for Memories will begin offering an emergency over- night respite program scheduled to begin in 2020.
PUBLISHER
Sherii Sherban, Special to Senior Times
Miles for Memories offers several safe return programs to create greater peace of mind and support for the care- giver. One such program is the Help Home program. It is designed to pro- vide support for the caregiver as well as for law enforcement and emergency responders to help the person with dementia return home safely
The Personal I.D. bracelet has an aluminum slider and stainless steel clasp to keep it secure at all times. It is fully waterproof to prevent the need to remove it.
The G.P.S. watch and recovery brace- let is water resistant and secured with a traditional watch latch. It works with a dedicated phone line and can be traced anywhere a phone call could be received to within 20 yards.
The Help Home program allows family members (or other authorized persons) to submit a form containing pertinent information about the person living with dementia directly to law enforcement. This information is entered into a local database managed by the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority 911 center. This database is immediately accessible to vehicles in the field for all branches of law enforce- ment in Calhoun County, including the Michigan State Police. It allows them
to do a simple name or address inquiry to receive pertinent emergency contact information and more. This combined with the Emergency Response Guide for Encounters with People with Dementia creates solutions for bringing your loved one home safely. For a copy of the Help Home brochure please visit their web- site at www.milesformemories.org. It is found under the Safe Return tab.
Best of all, the caregiver has com- plete control over the content that is accessible from a click, a scan, or a call to the number on the reverse side of the band through the phone app or personal computer. Each band has its own I.D. and PIN numbers that are used to create a personal account for the wearer.
The Senior ID program is another component of the Safe Return Program and is included in the Caregiver Emergency Recovery Packet. It is designed with the caregiver in mind and allows for video, fingerprints, as well as personal information to be added to the online account.
For increased safety, training is reg- ularly offered at all levels of emergency response as well as through the CIT pro- gram offered through Summit Pointe.

COME RELAX, ENJOY A DAY AWAY & FEEL REFRESHED
In just 16 months, at least 32 indi- viduals have been safely and grateful- ly returned home.
We suggest that the caregiver also consider wearing a Personal I.D. brace- let in case they experience an emergen- cy. When worn by the caregiver, the notes field will alert authorities to the need to find the care receiver.
For more information on the Safe Return Program and how to obtain a bracelet for your loved one you can contact Miles for Memories at (269) 979-1412 ext. 305 or email memories@ scenepub.com.
The G.P.S. recovery bracelet is
the next step. The prototype has been approved and should be available to the public in just a few months, hopefully in time for the annual community stroll on September 14 in downtown Battle Creek.
