Services for older adults are most effective when they are coordinat- ed. The purpose of the Calhoun Professionals in Aging Network is to improve the lives of older adults in Calhoun County through education, information sharing and relationship building.
As part of its community collab- oration work, Senior Services, along with other sponsors, is organizing Senior Day at the Ball Park for seniors and their families and caregivers on Thursday, August 8, 2019; and is part- nering to sponsor a series of networking events for professionals working in the aging field on the third Thursday of the month at the Marshall United Methodist Church.
This newly formed group of profes- sionals working in the aging field meets monthly. Organizers have worked hard to recruit top notch, interesting speak- ers. Meetings are offered without cost to attendees and are open to all.
Older adults are great baseball fans. While the watching of Major League Baseball is down nationally, the aver- age age of a TV viewer of baseball is 57. Baseball has the oldest viewers of all major televised sports with 50% of its audience being age 55 or older (up from 41% ten years ago), according to Neilson ratings. Major League Baseball is the oldest national sports league hav- ing been founded in 1903. My 82-year- old Mom is a Detroit Tigers fan. Even when she is disappointed with a losing season, she watches all of the season’s 162 games. She schedules her life around Tiger’s games and has made her two adult children Tiger’s fans because of her enthusiasm. Battle Creek has a long tradition of supporting amateur baseball, which Senior Services is proud to support with sponsorship of Senior Day at the Ball Park.

Supporting events for seniors and
for providers of services to older adults are part of the work that the Calhoun County Senior Millage makes possi- ble. First passed by voters in 1996 and up for renewal in 2020, the Calhoun County Senior Millage helps seniors solve life’s problems, fills gaps in avail- able services, and promotes collabora- tion among aging providers.

Because of the high need for this pro- gram in our community, housing funds allotted for the year had already been used. “With this grant, we will be able to continue to provide emergency housing for vulnerable adults who need to quickly leave unsafe situations. We are very grate- ful,” said Angie Shepherd, Elder Abuse Victims Specialist Program Manager.
