As people unfurl their flags in these summer months, there are some things that they need to be aware of. Title 4 of the United States Code contains the “Flag Code” of the United States. The Flag Code contains instructions and rules regarding the display of the flag. While the Flag Code is quite extensive, I’d like to briefly point out some of its contents. In particular, the portions that relate to displaying the flag at home and general respect.
Lastly, while the Flag Code contains numerous other rules, it also indicates that when a flag is no longer fit for display it should be destroyed in a dig- nified way. This is typically done by burning the flag as part of a ceremony. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, but aren’t sure what to do with it, you can contact our office or drop

When flying the flag, it should only be flown from sunrise to sunset unless it is illuminated when it is dark out. The flag should also be taken down during poor weather unless it is a flag designed specifically for all-weather use. Of the summer months, July is my favorite. Warm weather, some spectac- ular thunderstorms, cookouts, baseball, and patriotic fervor brought on by celebrating our nation’s independence. I love driving down streets and seeing the American flag being proudly dis- played outside of homes. Few symbolic sights rival that of seeing Old Glory billowing effortlessly in the wind, with the sunlight illuminating it.
be used as clothing, bedding, or drapes and should always be allowed to fall freely. It should also never be displayed in a way that would allow for easy tearing or damage. No marks, insignia, letters, designs, etc. should be placed on the flag and it should not be used for advertising purposes. The flag should also not be printed on anything that is meant to be used and thrown away such as napkins or paper plates.

Door-To-Door Solicitation
By: Jessica VanderKolk
City of Battle Creek officials are ask- ing neighbors to be alert to unlicensed, door-to-door solicitation, especially related to recent storm damage and con- struction work.
Neighbors should feel free to ask for identification from someone who claims to be a licensed vendor.
If someone comes to your door and fails to produce a copy of their permit, ignores a “no soliciting” sticker, or otherwise causes concern, please contact Battle Creek Police at the non-emergency number, (269) 781-0911.
If you have questions about the per- mitting process, or would like to see the list of current, licensed vendors, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at (269) 966-3348, or visit battlecreekmi.gov. Navigate to Your Government, City Clerk, and Business Licenses.
All valid, active vendors will have an identification badge issued by the City Clerk’s Office.
