In the meantime, legislators present new bills on everything 110 different Michigan House members might imagine; House committees keep convening; and lobbyists continue to visit the Capitol to argue dif- ferent sides of issues. Different lobbyists recently visited me to articulate diametri- cally opposite views on whether the state government, or rather whether local gov- ernments, should regulate where gravel pits are allowed. There are different points of view on almost any issue.
I'm most interested in what you'd like the state to do. Please plan to see me at my monthly coffee hours on the first Saturday of each month and tell me what's on your mind.

I hope each of you are enjoying the warm days of summer. They won’t last long, so get out and enjoy the summer ver- sion of Pure Michigan while you can.
before emergency medical help arrives. The new laws will allow employees in public places, such as libraries and universities, to be properly trained and granted civil immu- nity to administer anti-overdose drugs in good faith.
A big thank you is in order to Sherii Sherban, COO of WW Thayne Advertising, a steering committee member for Miles for Memories, and Publisher of Senior Times, for asking me to participate on an opioid panel discussion in July at the Calhoun County Aging Profesionals meeting to discuss what’s happening at the state level regarding this issue.
The opioid crisis continues to impact families and communities. In 2017, there were more deaths from drug overdoses than car accidents in Michigan. Over 70% of these deaths were opioid-related.
As I said, I hope you are enjoying sum- mertime. If you’re still looking for interest- ing adventures this summer, the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) offers library card holders free or discounted access to more than 450 Michigan destinations, including state parks and recreation areas, historic sites, and cultural attractions. Cardholders can print one-day admission passes, either at home or their local library.
The opioid crisis is at the forefront of so many families in my legislative district. For help, please visit www.michigan.gov/ opioids. This site features information
on finding and getting help, including maps showing the location of licensed treatment centers and takeback sites for disposing of unneeded medication.
I recently supported legislation – now law – to allow governmental agencies to possess and administer what’s called an opioid antagonist to someone suspected
of suffering an opioid overdose. The drug reverses the effects of an overdose and can help save lives, especially if it is available

UNDERSTANDING ISSUES
Summer has arrived in the Capitol,
and that means more work on state budget negotiations. Governor Whitmer's office presently awaits a counter to her initial budget proposal presented back on March 5. Governor Whitmer has promised to keep legislators working in Lansing over the summer recess if the budget cannot be suc- cessfully negotiated before July.
I have recently introduced a bill relax- ing the burden of proof first responders must meet to receive benefits for ser- vice-related injuries. I've too stood with Attorney General Nessel in challenging some employers' wrongful classification
of employees as independent contractors, costing employees and Michigan taxpayers millions of dollars.

Looking toward autumn, hunters can begin to prepare for the fall hunting season by completing a hunter safety education course this summer. Courses are available in a traditional classroom setting or as a self- paced, online course (with a required field day).
