Families can access Disability Benefits through Social Security for children under certain circumstanc- es. They may qualify if they have a parent who is disabled or if the child is disabled. Social Security has two programs that pay benefits to disabled children: Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
To qualify for benefits due to a disability of their own, the child must prove financial need. If receiving SSI the children cannot receive FIP or a child only grant. These benefits con- tinue as long as the child is disabled and has low income.
Children are considered disabled if they have a physical or mental con- dition or combination of conditions that result in" and "severe functional limitations." The condition must have an expectancy of long-term disability or death.
You can apply on-line at www. ssa,gov go to your local SS office. You will need:

By: Micki Ogilbee, Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Counselor, Forks Senior Center
I never thought that seeing 1954 as a birth date would be important to me. Now when I see it, it propels me into action. This year, people born in 1954 are turning 65 and are eligible for Medicare.
