Social Security benefits are part of the retirement plan of almost every American worker. If you’re among the people cov- ered under Social Security, you need to know how much you might receive from us when you begin receiving benefits. These monthly payments may be a vital part of your retirement income. to get an instant estimate of your future retirement benefits, and to see the effects of different retire- ment age scenarios.
We base your benefit payment on how much you earned during your working career. Higher lifetime earnings result in higher benefits. If there were some years you didn’t work or had low earnings, your benefit amount may be lower than if you had worked steadily. Even if you have never worked under Social Security, you may be able to get spouse’s retirement ben- efits if you are at least 62 years of age and your spouse receives retirement or disabili- ty benefits. See chart on page 24.
On our website, you’ll also find our Retirement Estimator. It gives estimates based on your actual Social Security earnings record. Please keep in mind that these are just estimates. You can access the Retirement Estimator at mator.
Once you know your estimated retire- ment benefits, you can start coordinating other parts of your retirement plan. Saving money is also important. It’s never too early to begin saving, and doing so can help you live more comfortably when you stop working.

During this time of uncertainty, I am very pleased with the local leadership – from Battle Creek to Marshall to Albion – in keeping communication going out to res- idents, making sure resident’s needs are met; I assure you that their efforts in advo- cating for Calhoun County are paying off and being noticed at the state level.

Just a quick update on the state’s efforts to fight COVID-19. In recent weeks, I sup- ported and the state legislature approved state funding totaling $150 million to deal with issues surrounding COVID-19, with $50 million for immediate needs such as virus monitoring and testing, $50 million for critical health care providers to expand capacity for coronavirus response, and
$50 million to keep in reserve for when necessary. The legislature is on a scheduled break until mid-April.
Also in recent weeks, the U.S. Small Business Administration approved Michigan’s request for an Economic Injury Disaster declaration, opening the opportu- nity to small businesses to access low-in- terest loans from the SBA.
In an effort to remain healthy, all Michiganders are encouraged to follow recommendations from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control. These lists of recommendations, along with updates on the state’s emergency decla- ration, community mitigation strategies,
The EIDL designation means that Michigan small businesses, small agricul- tural cooperatives and non-profit agencies that have suffered substantial economic losses as a result of the COVID-19 pan- demic will now have the ability to apply for low-interest loans as part of $1 billion in funding made available to the SBA
by Congress in March. Small businesses looking to apply for these loans can visit for guidance and loan resources.
Finally, please stay safe and keep others safe by staying at home for now. My office is still accepting phone calls and emails, although many of the staff in the Michigan Senate are working remotely. Please reach out if you have questions or want to voice your opinion at (517) 373-2426.
