The Southwest Michigan (SWMI) Protective Gear Project (Project) was created on Facebook on March 20 for the purpose of connecting handmade fabric face coverings with the people who need them. It was originally con- ceived as SWMI Med Mask Project. Participation grew to well over 300 members in the first weekend of exis- tence. It was clear early on that differ- entiating between medical grade masks and handmade protective gear was critical to community understanding as we learned more about COVID-19. As a result, the Project grew.
packaged sets with all the pieces needed to complete 25 masks, and the instructions for constructing the masks were in each bag. Procedures were put in place to adhere to social distancing rules and reduce exposure. All com- pleted masks were laundered, pressed, and packaged. Volunteers donated their time and thread to sew the masks and ties, and returned the sewn masks to the drop-off location. Volunteers were sew- ing by May 5, and by May 15 all 500 masks were completed!

Today the SWMI Protective Gear Project has a collaboration with SWMI Print Force (creating 3D printed tools and gear), a partner group SWMI Protective Gear Vendors, more than 1,800 Facebook group members, a web- site, and has donated roughly 40,000 handmade fabric face coverings.
Sewists who completed the masks included Belinda Armstrong, Sandra Belmore, Sue Edmond, Deb Hargus, Mary Humphrey, Cheryl Mackinder, Mary Phillips, and Carin Pitzer. Terri Moser and Marcy Shafer washed, pressed, and packaged the masks for distribution to low income seniors throughout Calhoun County by the agencies previously listed.

The mission of the Project is to donate protective gear to health care, front line service workers, and high- risk individuals to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
We are all very grateful for the resources that have been created as we collaborate together in the face of this highly contagious and completely unfa- miliar crisis. We hope it won’t be too terribly long before everyone has all the masks that they need, and our scientific community meets the challenge of cre- ating effective treatment and prevention for COVID-19. Until then, it is such a joy to have your participation and sup- port.

Some of the more exciting aspects of the project are the wonderful part- nerships that have been created by, and in service to, our senior community. Notably, the Project has been able to work with Sherii Sherban, publisher, Senior Times, in order to distribute 500 pleated masks with ties and elas- tic through Calhoun County Senior Services and CareWell Services.

Ms. Sherban had already cut a significant portion of a large batch
of fabric, before she contacted the SWMI Protective Gear Project though Facebook. She asked for help sewing 500 pleated masks on May 2. She
Publisher’s Note: It was such a delight to work with the Project team. Their positive voice during this chal- lenging time for all was impressive and we could not have completed the task in such a timely way without them. Thank you to all that helped with this project, but also to those that have worked dili- gently on other masks projects as well!
