COVID RESOURCES
funding, flexible payment options, or energy-saving tools and resources are available.
• Apply for State Emergency Relief (SER) directly through the MI Bridges program for bill payment assistance if you are in jeopardy of losing heat or electric services, have already had ser- vice shut off, or are in need of a deliv- erable fuel, or call (855) 275-6424. You can also get assistance with the application process by calling 2-1-1 to be referred to a MEAP grantee that can help.
• Apply for a Home Heating Credit. Visit the Michigan Department of Treasury’s website to see if you quali- fy. Even though this funding is distrib- uted by the Department of Treasury, you do not need to file taxes or wait for a tax return to receive this credit, so apply now if you are eligible. For more information, read the MPSC’s Home Heating Credit consumer tip.
I remain committed to doing all I can to encourage these types of programs going forward, and looking for new ways we can help those in need. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office, with questions or con- cerns by calling (517) 373-0555, or by email at JimHaadsma@house.mi.gov.
This is a difficult time for all of us here in Michigan. And although this crisis has – for the time being – changed our lives in almost every way, I know we will get through this together, and come out the other side a stronger community.
Until then, it is important to recog- nize that although this has been tough on everyone, especially those who have lost loved ones, some people are also being hit harder economically than others.
It’s also important that the government at both the state and federal level have programs in place to help those that are having a tough time making ends meet due to circumstances entirely beyond their control.

That’s why I was happy to see the recent announcement that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is supplying an additional
$900 million for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for 2020. Of those funds, Michigan will receive an additional $35 million in federal funds to help households in communities across the state that are struggling to afford their utility bills during this pan- demic.
If you, or someone you know, are having a hard time paying energy bills, get in contact with your energy provider to discuss flexible payment plans, or call 2-1-1 or visit www.mi211.org for further assistance. Here are some additional steps you can take:
• Contact your utility or propane sup- plier to ask what kind of protections,
