                   MATTERS
Rev. Dr. James Gysel, Special to Senior Times STEADFAST LOVE
As I was thinking about the Thanksgiving holiday this month, I wondered about the connection between thanks and love. And I discovered there is a powerful connection. When I was researching this in my Bible this week, I discovered that the words “thanks” and “love” appear in the same verses actually 42 times! And they’re all in
the Old Testament! So what? So that’s
a big deal because of the way the word “LOVE” is referred to. In every case it’s in reference to God’s love. So what the big deal about God’s love? The big deal is this, God’s love is consistently qualified by the word “steadfast.” Go ahead look it up beginning in 1 and
2 Chronicles, Psalm 136 (26 times!), eight other times in Psalms, and once in Jeremiah 33.
“After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess
the damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Startled by the eerie sight,
he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and
There’s a story that makes this point so well:
The good news is that God’s Love is directed at you! Constantly, never changing ... in spite of your ups and downs as a human ... and this love will last forever into eternity.
had gathered them under her wings. She could have flown to safety but refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat had
Is our love exactly the same as God’s love? No, but we are made in God’s image and we do have the power to love. And we do have the power to change and do an even better job of loving.
scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast. She had been willing to die so that those under the cover of her wings would live.”
That’s the perfect illustration of God’s love that has staying power no matter what.
Steadfast is constant, never chang- ing, always consistent, continuing on FOREVER.
Love is something for which we are thankful! God’s love is something for which we are especially thankful! In fact, do you know that God is the reason that we are even able to love? It’s true! 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.”
What are you thankful for this year? I’m thankful for God’s steadfast love.
Faithfully yours, Jim Gysel
