 FINDING JOY
SENIOR PROGRAMS
Helen Guzzo, MSW, Special to Senior Times
list for home-delivered meals in Calhoun County because of Senior Millage
tax dollars partnering with Federal
Older Americans Act and State Older Michiganian funding through CareWell Services SW, the area agency on aging for Calhoun and Barry counties.
Call Senior Services of Southwest Michigan at 866-200-8877 to sign up for meals or to volunteer.
Calhoun County Senior Services has been proud to partner with Senior Times, CareWell Services SW, and Plumeria
to recognize the Centenarians living in Calhoun County. Because of COVID precautions, we haven’t been able to host special events like the annual Centenarian Luncheon at Schuler’s Restaurant in Marshall, but we have been able to deliver bouquets of flowers and certifi- cates of recognition from the Governor
of Michigan to the 37 older adults who have reached the age of 99 or older who are still living in the County. Celebrating aging and recognizing Centenarians con- tributions to the community and to their families has been a great joy. COVID has prevented the joy of visiting each other but the joy of birthdays and receiving flowers remain. We are thankful to Senior Times for highlighting and celebrating Centenarians in this special December issue.
The Meals program does not have an income requirement; a senior must have
a need for meals because of health issues, disability, or being frail. If you or your loved one are homebound and struggle to make food independently, please do not hesitate to call to sign up for the program, it is a community resource designed
to help. Home-delivered meals help a frail senior maintain their independence and continue to live in their own home. Volunteers deliver meals and provide a weekday check on health and safety.

Eating, cooking, and baking are other joys still available during the COVID response restrictions. Sharing meals together with families and friends who don’t regularly live together has nec- essarily been limited to prevent spread
of COVID infection. I am proud that home-delivered meals have almost dou- bled the number of meals it has been able to provide to homebound older adults and younger disabled people during the pandemic.
Volunteers to deliver meals are always needed. Volunteers can participate as little as once a month or as often as once or twice a week. It takes about two hours
to deliver meals to between 10-15 peo- ple. Volunteers must be 18 or over or be accompanied by a parent or other adult. Volunteers are required to pass a back- ground check. In rural areas, because of the distance, paid drivers are often used. Delivering meals is a rewarding and easy way to give back to the community.
Each weekday from 10am to Noon, volunteers and paid staff crisscross the county delivering almost 600 hot meals to homebound, vulnerable, older adults. In Calhoun County, Senior Services of Southwest Michigan manages a state-of- the art commercial kitchen that prepares healthy, nutritious food from scratch and bakes fresh bread at the Kool Family Community Center in Battle Creek.
Finding joy by calling your loved ones and making good food are still avail-
able to us during the COVID response. Continue to be safe while celebrating the gift of life and love during the holidays. Happy Holidays!
This meal program is paid for with a partnership of Federal, State, and local Senior Millage funds. There isn’t a wait
