This month we recognize the crucial role of the family caregiver. Without the family caregiver, far too many of our loved ones would not get the care and support that they need. More times than not the primary qualification is willingness. It comes with on-the-job training, with a lot of trial and error, stress, and mental anguish, but also great joy. The decision to take on this role impacts your family relationships, from your adult parents to your siblings, as well as your spouse and children. Everyone should be involved in the decision to take on this role because when becoming a caregiver your sense of self often gives way to focusing on the loved one. Your support system needs to make sure that when you continue to set yourself aside that they do more than speak up, but also jump in and give you a break. This issue also addresses some of the greatest challenges of caregiving... bath time, caregiver burnout, time management, and keeping everyone in the loop. Thank you to all the family caregivers!
