TRAVELING IN PLACE
By: Zinta Aistars, Senior Care Partners P.A.C.E.
The most important travel plans you make this summer may be to your corner drug store. Or the grocery store. Or the medical clinic.
• Start an online book club with your friends or meet outside. If you can’t make it to the beach for that fun “beach read,” you can still read books with friends and have fun discus- sions.
That most important trip would be to your nearest COVID-19 vaccination site, and a reliable source of transport for our partici- pants to that site over this past year and at present has been provided by Senior Care Partners P.A.C.E., located in Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, and Albion. Our partic- ipants may call (269) 441-9319 and we will be at your door.
sure everyone is vaccinated, and you can now safely remove your masks while vis- iting in small groups outdoors, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidelines.
• Plant flower boxes and pots on your patio or deck to enjoy all summer long. Create a beautiful oasis of color. Plant an herb gar- den. Grow your favorite vegetables. Keep your pots and boxes within easy reach so that you can water, weed, and gather your harvest without much effort. Enjoy!

• Learn something new. It’s good for you. Studies show we maintain brain health when we learn a new skill. Even learning a few simple phrases in another language can sharpen your mind. Your library can help with audio versions or you can find lan- guage apps on your smart phone. Perhaps it can be the language spoken in your exotic virtual destination that you’ve chosen to explore.
• Organize a potluck party for your vaccinat- ed pals to gather outdoors at the end of the summer and share your adventure stories. If you have encouraged your friends to go on virtual journeys of their own, share your dis- coveries, share what you learned, and enjoy ethnic cuisine.
As weather warms and summer approach- es, nothing has provided more peace of mind than knowing that you are safe from the rav- ages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having that shot in the arm has opened many possibilities for summer fun – the kind we were not able to enjoy last summer.

While travel to distant places may still not be a possibility, the summer ahead can still
be filled with adventure. Here are a few ways you can travel in place or simply enjoy your own home:
• Your living room may be the most enjoyable
• Put up a birdfeeder. Watching birds gather for a few seeds outside your window or on your patio can be endless entertainment. Learning about birds, naming them, and learning about their habits, listening to
and learning to identify their songs, can be another new topic to sharpen memory skills.
All of this can be possible with a little help from Senior Care Partners P.A.C.E. We pro- vide in-home services so that seniors can stay in their own homes safely. We can help you invite the world to come to you.
and easily accessed journey this summer, a destination point for the most exotic “virtual travel.” Plan a virtual visit to the most exotic place you would love to experience. Check out books from the library, print or audio, view travelogues or historic documentaries, order in ethnic food prepared with the fla- vors of your chosen location.
• Attend a virtual author’s reading or attend a virtual artist exhibit. Listen to a virtual con- cert. There are many available online most every day. Ask your Senior Care Partners P.A.C.E. person to help you find one that appeals to you. This, too, can coincide with your chosen virtual travel destination.
