We are seeking to grow our services for the general public. These include trust management, financial power of attorney agreements, and money management programs, preventive offerings that can help people remain independent, avoid financial crisis, and prevent the need for court intervention.
We are a social enterprise driven by our nonprofit mission, and simultaneously working to maintain our successful business. Our services are supported
by client fees that are necessary to cover service costs, and our fee schedule is adjusted to accommodate each client’s ability to pay.

                     MY NEW BETTER
the space. One of the most challenging actions was to take down my wall of fame. I took pictures before I disassem- bled my collection of photos of people and activities in our community from four decades. It now resides on my lap- top so I can still look at it every day, part of my new better.
Last year at this time I began talking about the, “New Better.” Quoting Napoleon Hill, "Every adversity, every failure, every heartbreak, carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit." This is what I am still looking forward to, the seed of an equal or greater bene- fit, the new better for us all.
The pleasant surprise about moving to a new place is the sense of “newness” that it brings. Intentionally choosing what to bring and what not to was tedious but enjoyable at the same time. Moving into our new space was also refreshing as things were placed, just so. My next joy will be filling my new wall of fame put up by my brother, another part of my new better.
Our community is still impacted
by COVID but it is also learning to
be resilient. Studies have revealed the impact of isolation and we have started to weigh that against the trajectory of disease transmission. We are choosing to move toward to the new better.
More good news... The CDC contin- ues to learn more about how the virus
is responding and has just released updated isolation and quarantine rec- ommendations, “Given what we cur- rently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to five days, if asymptomatic, followed by five days of wearing a mask when around others. The change is motivated by sci- ence demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for five days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can con- tinue to mask for five days to minimize the risk of infecting others.” They go
on to say that if you’re vaccinated and have received a booster and are exposed but not infected that you should wear a mask around others for 10 days. CDC recommends testing again on day five of exposure. If you’re not vaccinated, or boosted, you should quarantine for five days, test again on day five, but mask for an additional five days. The new CDC guidelines are still under review at the state level. Nonetheless, we are mov- ing toward a new better.
Part of my trip down memory lane included reflecting on all the other locations my parents have moved our office to over the many years since
My past year has been full of activity and reflection. The most significant is that after 40 years of having our office in the same place we have moved to downtown Battle Creek. It’s hard to believe how much “stuff” accumulates over 40 years just because you have
Every moment we have a choice.
We can choose to look toward the pos- itive changes that will come in 2022. According to Napoleon Hill, "Life reflects your own thoughts back to you." So in the new year, I will continue to reflect positive thoughts and to know that it will get better... My new better.
Sherii Sherban, Special to Senior Times
it began in 1971. As I mentioned last month, talking with friends and family about their memories may yield differ- ent results but they can really fill in the gaps. It was interesting reflecting on each of those locations with my brother and realizing how differently we looked at each location. Actually, it was a lot of fun... All part of my new better.
It’s exciting to ponder what 2022 could be like. I have new expectations as I focus on the newness of the year, our new office and neighbors, new staff supported by our long and trusted staff, new friends I will meet, and new mem- ories that will be made with family and friends.
The suffering for many has been real and powerful but the stability provided by others can help all of us to choose the positive side of the coin, or the seed of an equal or greater benefit, and to find... The new better.

The thing about the new better is that I always live by the mandate that we should do the best that we can based on what we know. But that is followed with, when we know better, then we should do better. It’s all part of the new better.
If you have found the positive side of the coin I invite you to share that with others. Help them to replace their fear with the joy of renewal. That help can come through the phone, from a letter or card, a zoom call, or when you’re ready a safely placed hug and a yummy casserole. Help those around you to find their new better.
May you find your new better in the new year!
