NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION, “WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS”
By: Sherii Sherban, Publisher
Somehow the New Year marks the perfect time to make changes and brings with it the hope that this time the changes will last. But lets face it, most people are a bit over zealous and while they may have started out like a rocket ship they seem to putter out long before the calendar turns much past February.
So how can we choose to make changes that will last? For me, I’ve learned that changes need to be meaningful not just wishful.
6. Quit smoking
7. Avoid slip and fall
8. Acquire sufficient sleep
9. Spend quality time with grand children 10. Consider volunteer possibilities
11. Bring back old friendship
12. Keep your brain working
Living Maples suggests 18 resolutions:
1. Exercise your brain
2. Read more books
3. Listen to audio books while doing chores 4. Make healthier food choices
5. Invest in your skincare routine
6. Keep sugar away
7. Exercise
8. Set a flexible walking schedule
9. Join an online community
10. Start gardening
11. Involve music in your life
12. Improve your balance
13. Explore new hobbies
14. Volunteer
15. Start doing yoga
16. Learn a new language
17. Upcycle your clothes
18. Give yourself more compliments
together, more time on the phone, more stories to share, more memories to hold dear. All of these things enrich my life. All that other stuff, while important, becomes the mechanics of how I fill out the rest of my life.
A New Year’s resolution list for me would have ‘family and friends’ added to everything that I’m already doing. My continual list of yearlong goals might look something like:
1. Continue to exercise...
with family and friends. 2. Continue to eat healthy... with family and friends.
I have looked at the trends for New
Year’s resolutions over the past 10 years. Commonalities year over year create a consis- tency of both the goals and the eventual setting aside of the same said goals. It appears that
the majority of New Year’s resolutions revolve around weight loss, fitness, and improved physical health. Complementary to that would be eating better and practicing better self-care. Some are more focused on learning a new hobby or skill. Finally, spending more time with family and friends seems to be on many lists. The interesting thing to me is that all of these goals are worthy of working on all year long, not just in January, so why are we so easily sidetracked? Or are we?
3. Continue to read and share... with family and friends.
Answer: life happens and priorities of the moment pivot. Maybe there was too much change at once. Or maybe the change was not defined well enough. Check out these recently published lists for mature adults in 2022.
10. Continue to evaluate my health so I can spend quality time with family and friends.
Oasis Space suggests these top resolutions: 1. Healthier diet
2. Be active
3. Sort through medical records
4. Health check-up
5. Limit alcohol consumption
I don’t need January first to remind me that these items are important because they are important all year long but I do enjoy the pos- itive enthusiasm that others bring to the New Year. It also doesn’t imply that I’ve failed even if I’ve had a bad day or week, but rather that it’s a continual, joyful work in progress.
These are all worthy goals but many fail because they believe they can make all the changes happen at once rather than realizing that long-term change comes from a long- term commitment. As an example, loosing 10 pounds is great but what’s really important to sustain that is a long-term change in your diet. Short-term goals when combined create long- term success. You just have to figure out how they fit together in the long run.
9. Continue to share my home... with family and friends.
As I reflect back on 2021 I am thankful for family and friends. They help give my world meaning. And as I go into 2022 I must say that I want more of that. I want more time
As you evaluate your list this year, remem- ber to focus on what’s truly important to you so that you too may experience a life that is full. Happy New Year!
4. Continue to volunteer... with family and friends.
5. Continue working my brain... with family and friends.
6. Continue to make memories... with family and friends.
7. Continue to declutter... with family and friends.
8. Continue to enjoy the outdoors... with family and friends.
