STATE GOVERNMENT
Dear Readers,
Thank you for reading my editorial.
community. I was most certainly glad to vote in favor of these funds that will be used to further develop and expand the Albion River Trail. Now communi- ty members have even more reason to enjoy this beautiful outdoor space. It’s a perfect spot for a walk or a bike ride while taking in the splendid scenery and fresh air.
My goal with these is to inform you on what is going on in the state govern- ment and hopefully improve how the state government works for you.
The Michigan Legislature has been hard at work since January. My office has been receiving calls encouraging
us to repeal the retirement tax, and I’m proud to announce that its repeal was one of the first bills that Gov. Whitmer signed into law this session. House Bill 4001, Public Act 4 of 2023, implements a tax deduction for retirees. The bill also expands the working families tax credit from 6% to 30% of the federal benefit. The working families tax cred- it, also known as the Earned Income Tax Credit, supports working, low-in- come families.
There are other exciting investments in the city of Albion in recent months. The state also intends to invest funds into refurbishing McIntosh Park, and over three million dollars was approved to rehabilitate several housing units in downtown Albion.
The House of Representatives recently passed HB 4238. This bill con- tains investments in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund capital outlay projects. There are 15 land acquisition projects funded at $15 million and 30 land development projects totaling
$8.3 million, including $300,000 for
an expansion to the Albion River Trail. This is very exciting news for our

On the first Saturday of each month, I host open coffee hours at Mr. Don's in Springfield from 9-11am and at Stirling Books and Brew in Albion from 1-2:30pm.
~ Respectfully, Jim Haadsma

A Wandering Solution
Is your loved one impacted by dementia?
Regain your peace of mind by taking steps to help your loved one return home safely. It’s as easy as a simple scan using a smart phone camera.
When your loved one’s bracelet is scanned a text message goes to the emergency contact. A tap of the button will also send a G.P.S. location and directions to the emergency contact in 5 seconds or less.
Devices work across Michigan and beyond. Nearly 150 individuals have been returned home safely, and counting...
