But have you noticed that not every trouble is a crisis? When the crisis comes, it has center-stage in your life and in some cases you’re literally fight- ing for your life. It’s happened to me
Third: Let Go and Let God. Put your crisis in God’s hands. He asks us to come to him and do this. “Come to me all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” ~ Jesus, Matt. 11:27.
in the Vietnam War, in some accidents, in my marriage, in the death of a loved ones, and in a heart attack just to name a few from my experience.
Fourth: Look for the good in every situation. Mister Rogers on PBS did a masterful job of helping children cope after the 9/11 terrorist attack on America. He told the kids to, “Look for the people who were helping,” in that moment that struck fear into children. So he pointed out the paramedics, the nurses and doctors, the firefighters, the policemen, the pastors, and the parents who were helping in that horrible crisis. He was able to find the good and calm the hearts of kids. Words of hope from the Bible share, “For we know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose.” ~ Romans 8:28
The question is what to do in the middle of a crisis.
Here are a few ideas. First let me share a metaphor with you: It’s the Chinese characters that carry the mean- ing of the word “crisis.” There are two characters in Chinese – one character means “danger.” And the other charac- ter means “opportunity.” Together they mean “crisis.” In other words, the crisis itself even though a dangerous thing, is also a poignant opportunity for some- thing to change. The crisis moment has potential for good to emerge.

First: Realize this is normal! Crises happen in life and they are unavoidable. This is a part of being human, and a limited and finite person. This doesn’t mean your life isn’t important (because it is), but simply that you’re breakable.
But if you’re like me, your first job is to stop and be still. From that quiet place all things are possible.

Most of you who read this column regularly have had your share of life’s troubles. I know. You share with me when you flag me down at Horrocks, at Clara’s, at a band concert somewhere, the bookstore, or just around town.

I’m good with that because I know I’ll always be a pastor at heart, and thoroughly enjoy helping people work through their issues in life.
Second: Quiet your heart by tak- ing time for silence and deep breath- ing. Silence is hard to come by in our world, yet it is possible to turn off all the distractions and be still. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
