The Advisory Committee voted to accept the name at the last meeting
in February. “Heritage” signifies the importance of traditions in Marshall, and of seniors themselves possess-
ing a legacy. “Commons” refers to the cultural and public places accessible to everyone. Enrichment means “to make fuller” or “more rewarding” as in help- ing seniors lead richer more fulfilling lives.
Heritage Commons represents the long awaited and much anticipated ful- fillment of a senior center for Marshall. Partnering with CareWell Services Southwest is the Calhoun County Office of Services to Seniors, the City of Marshall and Oaklawn Hospital.
It is our hope that the center can be a place where older adults find common ground. Socialization was the motivat- ing factor for many participating on
the activities committee. Karla Fales, CareWell Services Southwest CEO, suggests, “A shared meeting place
for older adults from many different backgrounds and life experiences.” The National Association of Senior Centers
data suggests that senior centers lead to higher levels of physical and emotional well-being, increased civic engagement and stronger social connections.
CareWell Services Southwest will have member applications available
at the Senior Health Fair in Marshall scheduled for April 6 at the Marshall Junior High. Initial offerings will include bunco, bridge, a book exchange, the nationally recognized Matter of Balance Program, the National Council on Aging’s Aging Mastery Program, lunch and learns, health programming, and other wellness activities.
