Each year 1 in 3 adults 65 and older falls; 20 to 30 % of those suf- fer moderate to server injury such as hip fractures or head trauma. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the medications you are taking. As you age certain medications will affect you differently.
Some medications can cause dizzi- ness due to a drop in blood pressure: • Pain medications like meperidine,
NSAIDS, Aspirin.
• Anti-anxiety medications like
Valium.
• Certain cardiovascular drugs like
Doxazocin and Quinidine.
• Diuretics like Lasix or HCTZ.
• Some blood pressure medications
like Metoprolol.
Some medications can cause drowsiness:
• Barbiturates like Phenobarbital. • Medications for insomnia like
Ambien.
Don't forget to discuss your use of over-the counter drugs with your doc- tor. Remember it's important to keep an up to date list of your medications. Ask your doctor the reason for each medication prescribed at least once
per year. Always take your medica- tions the way that they are prescribed by your doctor. You may also ask your pharmacist to review your medication list at least once per year. Be prepared to discuss your health conditions and if you feel dizzy, have pain or numbness when you walk.
Next, take a good look around the house.
• Use double side tape, tack to secure area rugs from the floor.
Easy Ways
• Remove clutter from all of your high traffic area and stairs including boxes, cords (electrical and phone), coffee tables, and magazine racks.
• Clean spilled liquids immediately.
• Use non-slip mats in your bathtub or
shower.
Finally, let there be light.
• Keep your home brightly lit up to
avoid tripping.
• Turn on the lights before using the
stairs.
• Use night lights in the hallway, bed-
room and bathrooms.
• Make sure that you have a lamp
within reach from your bed in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.
Remember, sometimes we all need a little help.
• Your doctor may recommend that
you use a cane or walker to help
keep you steady.
• Install grab bars in your shower and/
or tub.
• Consider using a raised toilet seat or
one with armrests. It makes it easier to get up and sit down.
You can help prevent a fall.
• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your questions or concerns.
• Keep active to help prevent falls and maintain your balance.
• Your home should be clutter free and brightly lit.
• Use assistive devices as advised or whenever needed.

As much as you may want it, you simply can’t turn back the hands of time. This can be frustrating as the signs of aging begin to set in.
The good news is that by adding
a few anti-aging tweaks and habits to your routine it’s quite possible to look younger, healthier and more vibrant than ever before. And, no, you don’t need surgeries, injections or expensive lotions or potions to look years young- er than you do today! Try introducing these anti-aging behaviors and before you know it they just might become a habit.
Daily Sunscreen
Studies continue to prove that people who protect their skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays look younger than those who skip sunscreen. Apply 30 SPF to your face every morning to reap the benefits of this simple age- defying habit.
Lotion Your Hands
Since the skin on the backs of your hands is naturally thin, it becomes increasingly important to apply mois- turizer here as you age in order to prevent it from becoming wrinkly and dried out. Rub some of the 30 SPF that you are applying to your face each morning to the backs of your hands to keep them supple and smooth.
Eat Less Sodium
When it comes to keeping your skin looking bright, tight and young: sodi- um is your worst enemy. Salty foods
cause your skin to become puffy and bloated, and increase the bags under your eyes. Avoid eating sodium rich foods and instantly look younger!
Get Enough Sleep
If you’d like to look younger then fight the urge to stay up late. Getting plenty of sleep, 7-9 hours each night, is key for allowing your body to pro- duce the ideal levels of estrogen and progesterone, hormones that boost your skin’s natural repair mechanisms and promote a healthy complexion.
Eat Your Greens
Getting a daily serving of greens (such as spinach, kale, or broccoli) is a simple way to brighten your complex- ion and fight aging. These dark greens are packed with carotenoids that con- tribute to healthy, perky skin. As a bonus, a daily dose of fiber rich greens will promote fat loss – especially when you eat these greens instead of a calo- rie dense side, such as rice or potatoes.
Exercise Daily
Exercise improves your circulation, which has a number of age reducing payoffs. Healthy circulation helps your skin to look its best and even reduces puffiness and bags under your eyes. Exercise also increases muscle tone which improves your metabolism and helps you burn fat, looking slimmer and younger.
