R–E–S–P
R-E-S-P... bet you thought I was going to start singing, didn’t you – about Respect, maybe? Well, no – I would like to sing because it makes people happy but really I want to talk (again) about respite and what that means to you as a family caregiver.
Respite really is just giving your- self a short period of rest or relief from something that is difficult; meaning for some it’s a 24/7 respon- sibility, for others it’s working and coming home with additional respon- sibilities and then for others it every day they have off doing for someone else – grocery shopping, paying bills, taking to doctor’s appointment – the list really does go on and on because being a family caregiver is different based on the situation.
Working with family caregivers
for almost nine years now it’s always amazed me how many people refuse to use any help and I’ve often wondered why. We beg, offer at no cost, talk about the effects that caregiving can have on a person, discuss what happens if something happen to you – where does that leave your person – again the conversations have gone on and on. We offer, at no cost, some limited respite care to give you that break, we’ve part- nered with CentraCare and through
a grant from Calhoun County Senior Services we’ve been offering and will continue to offer some non-traditional out-of-home respite (some evening hours and Saturdays) and again (much to my amazement) we’ve had some take advantage of this fantastic offer but not as many as would have thought.
As spring approaches, I ask each family caregiver out there to do one thing for yourself and that is... just think about what it would take to get you to take advantage of some respite – at no cost to allow yourself to recharge yourself so you can continue the jour- ney of family caregiving. If you decide you want to try it, please give Anne a call at (269) 441-0920 and let’s get the process started. The sooner the better – for everyone!
And now we’ll go back to the song (imagine I’m Aretha and I’m singing – with a good voice of course and a little word change)...
RESPECT – A little respect (just a little bit)
I get tired (just a little bit)
I’m runnin' out of energy (just a little bit)
And I ain't lyin' (just a little bit)
I'm about to give you all some respite And all I'm askin' in return, yay
Is to give me a call
And when you get home (just a, just a, just a, just a)
You’ll feel revived
