EVEN THE SMALLEST OF THESE
Well they left last week. I knew it would happen, but I’m always sad to see them go. But, I sure do enjoy seeing them when they’re around our garden and our deck.
Maybe you’re wondering who or what I’m talking about... my grandchil- dren? My in-laws? Nope. I’m talking about the hummingbirds that enjoy the feeders we put out every late spring. They faithfully come every day from mid-May on with their all-day flitting, feeding, and frenzied protection of the feeding spots.
The hummingbird is a most amazing miracle of creation – able to accomplish flight maneuvers that defy gravity. It can hover, it can fly backwards and sideways, and it can fly at speeds of more than 55 miles per hour. In a court- ship dive it can reach 60 miles an hour, swooping down and back again in a U-shaped dive. All this work, of course, uses an enormous amount of energy. An article in the Vancouver Sun noted that, “To keep up their blistering lifestyle, hummingbirds, of both sexes, burn up huge amounts of calories – the equiva- lent [for humans] of 1,300 hamburgers
a day, washed down with 60 litres of water, used mainly for cooling pur- poses.” Bird expert John Morton, of Wildbirds Unlimited in Vancouver, said in the same article, “Were we to operate at their energy level, our hearts would beat 1,260 times a minute, our body temperature would rise to 385 C and we would burst into flames.” Morton said that, surprisingly, all this activity does not cause the hummingbird to burn out early. “They can live up to 12 years, though many live less than six," he said.
I know the one male bird that pro- tected our feeders is the same one we've seen for eight years.
Such a tiny creature that does such miraculous things is strong evidence that there is a Power much greater that is at work in our world and all creation. And if God sustains these tiniest of creatures to accomplish amazing things, what wonderful things God is able to accomplish through you and me.
Even the small things you do in the name of the Holy One provide miracu- lous help. So keep praying and doing your good deeds.

Sweaters Are Needed
By: Fred B. Bachman
Have you ever run in a track and field relay race? The objective is to quickly pass the baton to your next teammate and together win the relay race. No matter what age you are,
you can run in our sweater relay race. The goal here is to encourage THREE other people you know to donate sweaters to Bachman Hebble Funeral Service between now and Thursday, Thanksgiving Day 2017. Since you are the “team captain” we would beseech you to also donate as many sweaters as you possibly can. This is the 22nd annual year that Bachman Hebble has coordinated this worthwhile endeavor. One of our in-house “giving back” to the community projects at Bachman Hebble has been known as “Sweaters for Warmth.”
For the average person, a sweater
is an accent or an accessory to our wardrobe; but for someone homeless a sweater can mean an article of clothing that provides needed heat on cold days and nights during Michigan winters.
Gently used and clean sweaters in all sizes are needed. We ask that you please “label” the size of the child’s sweater.
If you have a large quantity, we would be glad to pick them up. Call (269) 965-5145 during normal business hours and ask for Josh or Fred or email Fred Bachman at fred@bachmanhebble.com. Be sure to include your name and phone number so we can reply to your request.
Please bring the sweaters to Bachman Hebble at 223 North Bedford Road 8:30am-5pm weekdays. Other drop off locations include Edward Jones, HomeCare Transitions, Plumeria, Senior Times/Scene Magazine, and Heritage Cleaners. Every effort you make to help others is appreciated a thousand fold by the individuals who will benefit from a cozy sweater in the advancing cold winter season.
You can all be runners in our “relay race” passing the word on and collect- ing one or more sweaters for this year’s Sweaters for Warmth; after all word-of- mouth is the best source of information! A personal “thank you” in advance from Bachman Hebble and our many community “drop off” locations for your generosity and support of this worthwhile project.
We Need Sweaters!
We are collecting tired but true sweaters between now and Thanksgiving Day. Please bring your sweaters to Bachman Hebble Funeral Service & our supporting drop-off locations.
