SENIOR MOBILITY

local governments and private entities to expand transit options for seniors and the disabled.
"That would have ruined the concert," I told myself, imagining the headline: "State Rep Flies over Concert Floor, Falls to Death, Kills Old Lady on Concert Floor."
Governor Whitmer's administration has approved millions in grant fund- ing for those facing mobility issues. For example, in 2019, Battle Creek received $1.2 million state grant to use for an autonomous electric shuttle at the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This grant will help Veterans get around, reduce pollution, and support the transition to electric vehicles.
But I regained my balance, so that's not the headline.
There are also other programs and services available too. For example, seniors on Medicaid can get free rides to doctor appointments. For those

Transit and mobility choices are necessary for seniors who no longer drive and people who cannot afford
a personal vehicle. If we don't come up with new options for people to get around, everyday activities that most of us take for granted, like getting groceries or going to the doctor, could become out of reach for the most vul- nerable members of our state. Even Uber drivers will ignore potential cus- tomers with wheelchairs.
We all know how important it is to stay involved and updated on what's happening in our state government. To keep updated, you can visit my website at Haadsma.housedems.com or follow me on Facebook @HouseJimH. Senate Bill 25 will allow disabled Veterans to deduct taxable income attributed to cancellation or forgive- ness of a student loan pursuant to the U.S. Department of Education’s Total and Permanent Disability Discharge Program. Under this bill, disabled Veterans can deduct income attributed to the forgiveness of a student loan for the 2016 to 2019 tax years and going forward beginning in 2025.
"Senate Bill 25 is a great step towards recognizing the sacrifices
and service of Michigan's disabled Veterans,” said VFW Michigan
State Commander Kevin Conklin. “The VFW Department of Michigan applauds Governor Whitmer and Senator Tom Barrett's efforts to make Michigan the best state in the Nation for Veterans and their families, and we look forward to future legislation that helps us accomplish this goal together."
