Managing Stress as a
Sandwich Generation Caregiver
By: Glin Winsor, Community Leader
2. Ask for help. Reach out to siblings or family friends if you need a weekend off with your spouse.
4. Take advantage of free or paid help. Many companies have employee assistance programs where you can find a variety of resources from adult day care to online counseling. Ask about caregiver support groups and talk to oth- ers in similar situations.
5. Take care of yourself. Get cre- ative with your time. Fit in exercise before everyone wakes up, try power walking over lunch, or take one of
your kids to an aerobics class with you. Schedule your doctor appointments
and preventive health checkups at the same time you do it for everyone else. Make use of walk-in clinics or pharma- cists who can give vaccines without an appointment. Make sleep a priority; you can cope so much better with a good night's sleep. Finally, make mealtime fun instead of a chore. Try to assign everyone something to do and rotate the tasks.
A sandwich is generally something delicious between two pieces of bread. If you are a caregiver for both older rel- atives and your children, you are part of the Sandwich Generation, which is not always such a treat.
3. Use technology to communicate.
A home with multiple generations does have its benefits. Grand parents delight in seeing their grand children in achievements and activities such as soc- cer games, band concerts, school plays, and graduations. When children help with caregiving they become caring, understanding adults.
It's important to keep in touch with rela- tives and friends, but that can take time from your busy schedule – try instead keeping in touch through social media, email threads, or group texts. Send pic- tures and brief updates when you get the time, instead of responding to everyone individually.
Being a Sandwich Generation caregiver can be taxing. Your chal- lenge is to make use of all possible resources to make you and your multi-generational family a happy one!
To enjoy the benefits of living within a multi-generational home, try these tips to handle the stress of being a Sandwich Generation caregiver.
Get used to a house that is not in perfect order. Your loved ones will not remem- ber that you spent three hours cleaning the house but your son will remember you went to his baseball games and your mom will remember the times you spent together.
1. Learn to let go and prioritize.
