My next question could be a little more challenging. What do you call a group of senior citizens? While there doesn%u2019t seem to be a single %u2018official%u2019 collective noun, the moniker often depends on the situation and the tone you want to set.If you are referring to a group within a certain age bracket, specific Latin-based terms are used: Sexagenarians are people in their 60s; Septuagenarians in their 70s; Octogenarians in their 80s; Nonagenarians in their 90s; Centenarians are 100 years or older and if you ask me, mighty darned fortunate to have such %u2018long-lifely%u2019 genes. Here are some cheerful ways to describe a group of senior citizens: the golden gang, vintage vibes crew, the living legends league, and the council of sages. And just for some fun, how about using a flock of fogies, a gaggle of geezers, a grin of grand parents, a %u2018nap%u2019 of Nanas and Papas, a shuffle of seniors, and best yet, a wisdom of elders?Whether we are chronologically gifted or not, let%u2019s get together as a %u2018group%u2019 in our Senior Times and embrace our ages. We are after all %u2018active aging consumers,%u2019 a modern marketing term for seniors who remain vibrant and physically full of life. That%u2019s us folks.LET%u2019S BE CHRONOLOGICALLY GIFTEDWhile looking out the window the other day at a flock of birds on my birdfeeder, I began to think about how that term %u2018flock%u2019 came to be. As a test, I asked a friend a couple of days later what he called the group of birds, you know, what is the collective noun for that group? He responded as I had anticipated by calling them a %u2018flock.%u2019%u201cHow about a group of bison or cattle, what do you call them?%u201d I asked. He responded as I figured by calling them a %u2018herd.%u2019Those are familiar terms that most of us use, but what about some lesser-known animal groupings, what are they called? Here is an abbreviated list that might surprise you. They are quite descriptive if you think about them. Once you peruse them, you might have some fun and ask your family and friends, especially children if they know the group names for these creatures. Or better yet, ask them to come up with some unique descriptive names themselves that might be added to our future lexicon. Some make a lot of sense, others, not so much. Here goes. Bluejays: scold; Camels: caravan; Cats: pounce; Ducks: paddling or team; Elephants: a herd, memory, or parade; Flamingos: a stand or flamboyance; Giraffes: a tower; Hippopotami: a bloat or thunder; Leopards: a leap; Monkeys: a barrel, cartload or troop; Mosquitoes: a scourge; Owls: a parliament; Oxen: a team or yoke; Porcupines: a prickle; Rhinoceroses: a crash; Skunks: a stench; Snails: a walk (I%u2019d think a %u2018slow meander%u2019 might better describe them); Squirrels: a scurry; and Weasels: a colony, gang or pack.
