The best part is that my headaches have diminished measurably. An unintended side-effect of the reduced inflammation has been weight loss. That%u2019s a win-win. I pay very close attention to what I eat, and what supplements I take, but also my movement efforts. I have incorporated yoga, stretching, strength training, walking, biking (when it%u2019s warm enough), and massage and chiropractic care. I look forward to getting back to running again when it warms up a bit more. As I move forward in 2026 I will continue to make my health a daily priority, not just a New Year%u2019s resolution. From managing nutrition to maintaining movement it is worth my long-term independence to stay on top of it.Each year Medicare offers you the benefit of a %u201cWellness%u201d visit. Schedule a visit with your chosen provider to develop or update your personalized plan to help prevent disease or disability, based on your current health and risk factors. The yearly wellness visit isn%u2019t a physical exam; it%u2019s a place to identify goals and measure progress annually. Schedule yours today for your health and your independence.Publisher%u2019s note: I am not a health care provider and my situation is clearly going to be much different from yours. I will continue to work with my traditional health care providers, which also include getting my eyes and hearing checked on a regular schedule, but I have added more.HEALTH MEANS INDEPENDENCEFor many years I have watched, and lived, how health is impacted by mobility, nutrition, and exposure infectious disease. Our independence is measured by how well we are able to manage these influences; the more healthy we can remain the greater our independence. For me, there is a balance between traditional health care and new options to maintain optimal health. I have established health care providers and make regular visits important, but I also utilize additional options that benefit my health as well. I began my journey with a functional medicine health care provider because I wanted to get rid of headaches without using so much over-thecounter pain relief. With everything else ruled out with traditional medicine testing, my thought was that the only thing left was nutrition. My functional medicine team helps me to manage what foods are most beneficial for me and which ones to avoid. We also discuss what%u2019s missing from my diet and have added (or removed) supplements that could be beneficial. Decisions have been made using test results and observation. Tests have included the same ones that I have also done at my DO%u2019s office including blood, urinalysis, saliva, and even hair. These intentional tests evaluate reactions to food and supplements, hormone levels, exposure to heavy metals, and even measure chronic condition risk factors.
