Health = Independence. Health is not just physical but also mental and spiritual. Most of us want to continue to live independently in our own home, in the place that surrounds us with fond memories, as we age. We must take an active role in seeking health to make that a reality. That includes regular health check ups, following health advice, healthy eating, movement, and interaction with others, but also includes making a plan for support when needed. The remod- eling checklist provides a guideline regarding safety issues to address. It becomes especially important to review when an aging adult is living alone. The loss of a spouse, a friend, or an aging parent, all result in grief that can challenge independence. Learn about how to help loved ones through it from the perspective of providing support, being open to support yourself, and transitioning through the grieving process toward renewed independence and joy. Finally, intentionally identify who will be your best health advocate and complete your legal documents.
